Verslunarmannahelgi is Iceland’s unofficial “everyone-goes-somewhere” weekend. And, if I’m being straight with you it’s simply the biggest summer holiday in Iceland (everyone is happy!)<\/p>\n
Locals treat it as a sacred escape. The perfect time to drop tools and grab a bj\u00f3r (beer) or two, or ten.<\/p>\n
Whether it’s three days of adventuring, partying, or floating in hot water with a weapon of choice (a beverage), this long weekend is a cultural institution.<\/p>\n
The Origins of the Merchant\u2019s Weekend<\/h3>\n
The name translates to “Merchant’s Weekend,” a nod to its roots as a break for shopkeepers back in the day.<\/p>\n
Before online shopping and contactless payments, merchants were grafting hard through the summer, so the country gave them a well-earned break (kudos to Iceland for it).<\/p>\n
What began as a retail breather turned into one of Iceland’s most beloved summer celebrations.<\/p>\n
Now, it’s a national excuse to leave town and celebrate summer in full force.<\/p>\n
So, I think now you are understanding why it’s an awesome time to visit, and I’m only a\u00a0smidge<\/em> bias.<\/p>\n It always falls on the first weekend of August<\/a>.<\/p>\n That means you get three full days (Saturday to Monday) of open roads, full campsites<\/a>, and Icelanders doing what they do best, chasing that yellow thing in the sky like no tomorrow.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re planning a trip to Iceland around this time, lock it in early.<\/p>\n You know that feeling when the world seems to be collectively exhaling? I know classic Nordic life, am I right?<\/p>\n These rustic getaways are dotted across the countryside.<\/p>\n They’re mostly wooden cabins, complete with wine glasses (the most important thing according to my lady), hot tubs, and absolutely no mobile signal (ok, not really this, but we can dream).<\/p>\n For Icelanders, this is their way of pressing pause.<\/p>\n You might not have your own cottage, but you can rent one nearby or check into somewhere equally peaceful (spoiler: we know just the place, and it includes the word ‘Hill<\/em>‘<\/a>).<\/p>\n Geothermal baths are a mandatory experience if you’re planning on visiting Iceland in summer.<\/p>\n Secret lagoons, natural rivers such as Reykjadalur<\/a>, and Iceland’s famous swimming pools<\/a>, are where the real magic happens.<\/p>\n It\u2019s the unofficial national sport of Verslunarmannahelgi.<\/p>\n If you’re not in a hot tub by Saturday evening, you’re not doing it right (beer, wine, or your choice of poison to accompany this should also be mandatory<\/em>).<\/p>\n If your idea of the perfect weekend doesn\u2019t involve queuing for portable toilets or sleeping next to a speaker stack, then you\u2019re my kind of traveller.<\/p>\n Fl\u00fadir is where the volume turns down and the scenery turns up.<\/p>\n It\u2019s Icelandic summer in its most relaxed form and you don\u2019t need to sacrifice great food<\/a>, \u00e6vint\u00fdri<\/a>, or that post-soak bliss.<\/p>\n Don\u2019t get us wrong, dancing in a field is great, and joining \u00fej\u00f3\u00f0h\u00e1t\u00ed\u00f0 is a fantastic experience for some (mainly under-25’s with the rave shades).<\/p>\n But so is peace and quiet, country views, and the soft sound of bubbling hot springs close by.<\/p>\n If your ideal holiday includes a bit more serenity and a bit less tent-sweat, Fl\u00fadir is calling.<\/p>\n It\u2019s close enough to Reykjav\u00edk for an easy drive, but far enough away to escape the mayhem.<\/p>\n Fl\u00fadir sits in the heart of the South Coast, within reach of the Golden Circle<\/a>.<\/p>\n It\u2019s known for its greenhouses (such as Fri\u00f0heimar<\/a>), geothermal activity, and that magical small-town feel.<\/p>\n Walkable trails, steaming rivers, and a sense of calm you didn\u2019t know you needed.<\/p>\n You can do a lot here, or you can do very little.<\/p>\n Both are highly encouraged by our delightful onsite team looking forward to welcoming you, and bringing a cold one out to you in the hot tub (yes, it is that awesome).<\/p>\n While crowds swarm the Westman Islands, Fl\u00fadir holds its own, quietly.<\/p>\n Expect a few more people in town, but not many.<\/p>\n The Secret Lagoon becomes a hub of relaxed celebration for travellers and locals alike (feel free to grab another local craft beer there).<\/p>\n Local spots might host a low-key event or two.<\/p>\n But for the most part, this is where people come to breathe.<\/p>\n When it comes to picking your base for Verslunarmannahelgi, location matters.<\/p>\n You want comfort, calm, and easy access to the kind of natural wonders Iceland doesn\u2019t shout about, but probably should.<\/p>\n The Hill Hotel gives you all of that and then some.
